Sunday’s wind storm may have caused some roof damage for homeowners throughout the Miami Valley along with tree limbs scattered on their property.
News Center 7’s Monica Castro talked with an insurance agent about what they look at to determine if your roof needs to be replaced or repaired.
Most insurance policies will cover wind damage caused by a storm. To determine what steps to take next, most insurance agents look at the age of the roof plus the damage.
Insurance agent Greg Fay said he had a couple of people file claims.
“When the damage takes place to make sure you do what you can to mitigate the damage,” he said.
Fay says there’s a misconception that if your roof is damaged you’ll automatically qualify for a new roof, but if there isn’t too much damage then adjusters will just suggest replacing shingles.
“A lot of insurance companies are going to look at, for each slope, what is the percentage of shingles that are actually damaged, that’s going to be an indicator right there,” he said. “Insurance carriers are going to look at how well they can match up shingles on the roof to cosmetically put the roof back”.
